About Gorleston-on-Sea
|
Gorleston-on-Sea is a seaside holiday resort, a sea port and a borough of Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk, England. The population of Gorleston is around 5,882. The River Yare flows between the towns, and drains off the Norfolk Broads, emptying out through the inner harbour turning beside the light-house and pier into the North Sea.
Gorleston beach is on the western side of the river, with golden sands that stretch for several miles south towards Lowestoft. Beside the beach is a wide promenade with footpaths on the slopes, a modern cafe, and cliff top gardens above. The cliff top gardens feature mini-golf, tennis courts, a trim trail, many benches and free parking. This is a popular destination for locals and residents of the Waveney valley living around Beccles and Bungay. Parking here is free and easy. Gt Yarmouth Harbourmouth' webcam is located at the top floor of the offices of Budget Marquees on Cliff Hill in Gorleston-on-sea, where wealthy merchants built their homes to keep an eye out for their ships. It faces east overlooking the harbour entrance where the river Yare turns by the light-house, and pier, into the North Sea on Norfolk's east coast - the 'Sunrise coast', in Norfolk, England. This is the northern entrance to the Norfolk Broads (125 miles of lock-free waterways covering 115 square miles) consisting of 40+ lakes and 5 rivers; the southern entrance is at Lowestoft, 10 miles south. All rivers form the Norfolk Broads flow out here. They are the Yare, Bure, Thurne, Ant and Waveney not forgetting the Wensum which flows through Norwich and the Tas which also joins the Yare just below the city. Admiral Duncan's 'Water Pump' is located here, too. |
Once a major player in the herring fishing industry, Great Yarmouth is now known as a major gas, oil and wind-farm industry service port. The new Outer Harbour was opened in February 2010 to welcome today's larger cargo vessels helping to export Norfolk's agricultural products, and the innovative Sea-Jacks ships which are installing and maintaining the wind turbines in the North Sea fields. The Inner Harbour continues to service cargo vessels and smaller ships and boats. See them all come and go on our webcam!
At the north end of the beach, the main buildings are the Pier Hotel, the Pavilion Theatre and the Ocean Room, beside which is a garden featuring a bandstand, with several cafes and restaurants, 'Bucket & Spade'' shops, three pubs, the Harbour Hotel, a sailing club, the lifeboat centre, 'Pop's Meadow' playground, and the pier itself (with a car park), where the river turns out to sea, and ships pass, guided by pilots, to service the gas, oil and wind turbines in the North Sea. Up above the beach on the cliff is the Cliff Hotel, several B&Bs and Guest Houses, and residential homes. A range of shops, businesses and food stores are found on Bells Road. A mile north of the beach is Gorleston high street. To the west beside the by-pass is a variety of out of town stores. Near by are the Norfolk Broads, a famous waterways holiday and National Park for boaters. Great Yarmouth is the better known holiday resort, a playground for holiday-making families, stag-nighters and gamblers. A Super Casino is opening soon! Are you a runner, or enjoy jogging on the prom? Come and try the Gorleston Cliffs Parkrun - it's held every Saturday, 9am, and is a free weekly 5km event. |
